With Deepest Respect for George Floyd

They killed your body but your life lives forever.

Merit in Montreal

I had a conversation
with a gentleman
silhouetted
against the evening sunshine
streaming through balcony windows.

His heart was warm,
you could tell that.
You could hear the smile
in his voice.

But you couldn’t see
that his skin
was black.

And I thought,
maybe that’s the answer:
make everyone
colour blind.
